BRICK, NJ — A Brick Township man has been been charged with robbing a bank in town after one of the bank tellers recognized him as a local, Brick Township police said Tuesday.

Zachary Canace, 42, was arrested at his Drake Road home not long after the robbery happened on Monday, Brick Sgt. Neal Pedersen said.

Brick police were called to the TD Bank at 2292 Hooper Ave. at 11:28 a.m. for the reported bank robbery. The teller told police Canace approached the teller's counter and said, "I need 5,000 Gs strapped to go. Do not hit the alarm button and nobody gets hurt, just give me my $5,000 now," Pedersen said.

The teller gave Canace money from her bank drawer and he left the bank, Pedersen said. During the investigation, another teller told police she recognized the man as someone she knew and gave police a description of him.

Officer Robert Heschle, who was familiar with Canace, recognized him from the description and knew he lived in the area of Tunesbrook Road, Pedersen said. That information was relayed to other responding police officers and soon Canace was located at a residence on Drake Road, he said.

Police set up a perimeter and waited, and when Canace came out of the house, they arrested him without incident, Pedersen said. All of the money taken during the bank robbery was recovered, he said.

Canace was charged with robbery and theft and taken to the Ocean County Jail, where he was being held as of Tuesday.
