Starting for Lacey was Junior Don Zellman, who dominated the Mustangs on the mound. Zellman went five strong innings, striking out six batters, only giving up three hits, and picking up the win for Lacey.
Senior Alec Merritt started for the Mustangs and pitched beautifully, he went six innings, giving up two runs on three hits and striking out five. Merritt took the loss, as his team struggled to score runs for him.
Lacey took the lead in the top of the 3rd inning. Junior Brandon Haggerty doubled to centerfield when Senior Tim Santiago came up short on a dive attempt and the ball bounced by him. Junior Alex Kraft singled in Haggerty to make it a 1-0 game.
Scoring chances came very slim for Memorial as their best chance to tie the game came in the bottom of the 5th inning. With one out Senior Tim Santiago and Senior Dylan Evans walked to put runners on 1st and 2nd base. Zellman was able to get Senior Andrew LaRosa to fly out to left field for the second out. Senior Brian Markoski loaded the bases with a hit by pitch, but Senior Nick Reyes smoked the ball right to the shortstop, who flipped it to second base to end the inning.
With runners on 1st and 3rd base with two outs for Lacey, the runner on 1st base broke early and Merritt stepped off the mound and tried to get him out at 2nd base, but was unable to. The runner from 3rd base took off for home plate and LaRosa’s throw home was not in time as Lacey added to their lead 2-0.
Junior Tom Corragio came into pitch for Lacey in the bottom of the 6th inning and threw a scoreless 6th and 7th inning and picked up the save for Lacey. Corragio struck out two batters, while giving up one hit.
Brick Memorial only had four hits as a team, Markoski doubled in the 1st inning, Evans singled in the 3rd inning. Senior Dave Clarke picked up a hit in the 4th inning. Senior James Donlon pinch hit in the bottom of the 7th inning and singled to lead off the inning.
The Mustangs have lost two straight games and their record falls to 9-4. They will resume play on Friday at 3:45 P.M., as they will take on Toms River East at home.
