BMAC Invites You To Golf Outing, Gift Auction

BRICK, NJ — In the fight to halt the heroin and opioid epidemic that is killing thousands of people across the country, the Brick Municipal Anti-Drug Coalition is doing what it can to fight locally.

BMAC, a group of citizen volunteers, is funded by a grant from the Governor's Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse and by community fundraisers, and is focusing its efforts on prescription medication misuse, opiates in particular, which the national Centers for Disease Control has said is fueling the heroin crisis.

One of BMAC's key fundraising events is its annual golf outing. The golf event resumed two years ago when BMAC was resurrected to begin the battle against drugs and alcohol anew.

This year's BMAC golf outing is scheduled for Columbus Day, Monday, Oct. 10 at Eagle Ridge Golf Club in Lakewood. Golfers can participate for $150 per golfer; foursomes are welcomed to sign up as well. Golf fees include greens fees, a cart, bag drop service, use of the driving range and locker room, a bag lunch, dinner and gifts.

For those who don't golf but would like to participate, there is a $50 per-person dinner only option. The dinner includes a chance to win a variety of prizes donated by Brick Township businesses.

For those who would like to support the outing and BMAC in a larger way, there are a number of sponsorship opportunities available, including flag sponsorships for the 18 holes; hole sponsorships, with signs placed at the tees; cart sponsorships, and sponsorships of the driving range and putting green.

The golf outing is the largest fundraiser BMAC hosts each year. The funds are being used to generate educational materials that pharmacists can hand out with prescriptions, telling people where to dispose of unneeded medications. They go to efforts to educate real estate agents about the potential for open house events to be an avenue for addicts to steal prescription medications from homes.

And funds are used also to provide drug- and alcohol-free events for teens and families, such as teen dances at the Civic Plaza and family movie nights.

The fight to turn the tide against the heroin epidemic will require a united effort of township officials, police and citizens — and BMAC brings those groups together, along with local religious leaders and simply those who want to help.

BMAC meets the fourth Monday of the month at 7 p.m. at the municipal building.
