Fifty children were evacuated and their day care center and an adjacent store at a Brick shopping center have been closed temporarily after water leaking through the building’s roof damaged electrical fixtures, creating a hazard, police said.
Firefighters from the Breton Woods and Pioneer Hoser fire companies, along with Brick Township Police Sgt. John Talty and Officer Mike Feeney, responded to the Top Tomato Square on Brick Boulevard at about 8:45 Wednesday morning to investigate what was described as a hazardous condition, Brick Capt. Ron Dougard said.

At the scene, they discovered extensive damage in both the Smarty Pants Day Care and the Party Fair store had suffered extensive damage from water that leaked in from the roof of the building. Some of the water had leaked into ceiling tiles and damaged the electrical fixtures, Dougard said, creating a significant hazard.
The building department and the township’s Bureau of Fire Prevention ordered the building and businesses closed. They will remain closed until the roof is repaired, an electrician can evaluate the severity of damage to the electrical fixtures and they are repaired as needed, and until the buildings are deemed safe, Dougard said.
