Brick To Extend Outdoor Dining Permits

An amended ordinance introduced at the Township Council meeting will allow restaurants to have outdoor seating year-round.

BRICK, NJ — As the process of reopening New Jersey's restaurants for dining continues to be limited amid the coronavirus pandemic, Brick Township is taking steps to try to expand opportunities for its eateries.

In May, the township approved outdoor dining permits to allow restaurants to set up outdoor seating. But the initial ordinance limited outdoor dining to May 1 through Nov. 30.

An amendment to that ordinance introduced last week will permit outdoor dining year-round.

The change comes as indoor dining reopened in New Jersey, but with restaurants limited to 25 percent of capacity.

All other rules for the permits, which cost $150, will remain in place. They will be valid for 12 months.

Permit applications will be reviewed by the township's zoning officer, the police department and the fire marshal to ensure the application meets established laws, rules, regulations and codes.

Applicants have to provide a drawing showing what the outdoor dining area will look like and provide details of barriers, spacing between tables, aisles and entrances to area. Restaurants will be responsible for ensuring furniture is secured, litter is managed, the dining area is washed and noise ordinances are followed.

Outdoor dining areas will be permitted to operate from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday through Sunday.
