Brick Girls Hockey Team Wins Game 1 Of Championship Series

The team plays second game Sunday with hopes of advancing to nationals; Brick also has boys U14AA team competing this weekend.

WEST CHESTER, PA -- The Brick Hockey Club's 16UAA girls team opened its pursuit of the Tier II Atlantic Amateur Hockey Championship with a 2-0 victory over the West Chester Quakers.

The team, whose players hail from a number of towns, including Woodbridge, Howell, Toms River, Jackson, Somers Point, Cape May and of course Brick, scored in the first period to take a 1-0 lead, and added the second goal in the final period, while goalie Katelyn Brezniak from Toms River notched her fourth shutout of the year.

The teams play again Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Ice Line; if Brick wins Game 2, they advance to the national championships in Barre, Vermont, at the end of March. If the girls advance to nationals, they will be just the fourth team in the more than 50-year history of the Brick Hockey Club to do so.

In the boys tournament, the Brick Hockey Club's 14UAA team fell to the NJ Avalance 3-1 in Game 1 of the NJYHL playoffs; they meet again Saturday at 7 p.m.
