Brick Girls' Kids For K9s Dog Walk Raises Funds For Police Dogs

The 11-year-olds are trying to raise money to help protect Brick's police dogs from overdoses.

BRICK, NJ — A pair of Brick Township girls who are trying to raise money for the township police department's K9 unit are holding a Kids for K9s Dog Walk at Drum Point Sports Complex on Saturday morning.

The girls, 11-year-olds Maya Jackson and Colleen Crate, have been making the rounds of various events to talk about their project, giving presentations at the Brick Township Council meeting when the event was approved, to the Board of Education meeting in August, to the Brick Farmers' Market. Their goal is to raise money for overdose treatment kits for the township's K9 unit to treat the dogs if they accidentally encounter opioids, fentanyl in particular. The fentanyl problem has been growing by leaps and bounds and the potency of the drug makes it a danger to humans and animals. Dogs are at risk not only of inhaling it but also of absorbing it through the pads on their paws, the girls have said.

The overdose prevention kits for K9s cost about $75 apiece.

The dog walk event will include raffles, vendor tables, dog snacks as well as the chance to meet the Brick K9 unit’s members and see them perform in a demonstration.

There also will be "fun photo-ops," the orgainzers said. The event even has a theme: "Every Dog is a Superhero."

"Dress your four legged friends up for the day or purchase one of our ‘large dog/human’ capes on the day of the event!" says one post on the event's Facebook page.
