Brick High School Girls Soccer Team Makes Strides On, Off Soccer Field

The team qualified for the Shore Conference Tournament for the first time in several years and raised big money for breast cancer research.

BRICK, NJ — The Brick Township High School girls soccer team has been having one of its best seasons in several years.

But it's not just on the field where the Dragons are excelling.

The team has put its heart into fundraising for breast cancer research, with its Pink Game and through rallying the support of friends and family. Those efforts resulted in a $4,400 donation by the team at the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk in Point Pleasant Beach on Oct. 16.

On the field, Brick qualified for the Shore Conference Tournament with a record of 8-5-1, the Dragons' first trip to the SCT in six years. They opened with a dominating 6-1 victory over Middletown South in the preliminary round last Thursday before falling to top-seeded Wall 3-0 in the opening round. Brick is fourth in a tough Shore Conference Class A South division, behind Jackson Memorial, Toms River North and Toms River South. Brick split its home-and-home series with crosstown rival Brick Memorial, rebounding from a 6-2 loss in the first game at the Mustangs' field with a 3-2 victory under the lights at the Drum Point Sports Complex as the Dragons shut down Memorial's leading scorer, Leah Scarpelli, after she scored two early goals.

The junior varsity team also had one of its best seasons ever, putting up a record of 12-1-2, which could bode well for next year's varsity season.

Though Brick's Shore Conference Tournament run is over, the Dragons have qualified for the state soccer tournament. Seedings for the NJSIAA sectionals will be released this week, and Brick, currently 9-7-1, was sitting in seventh in power point rankings in Central Jersey Group III through Saturday's games, according to NJ.com, which maintains the high school sports records for the NJSIAA.

Brick is scheduled to play at Pinelands Monday in a nondivisional game.
