Brick Man Stabbed Himself, Begged Police To Shoot Him: Police

Breaking: The man, charged with aggravated assault, came out of his home covered in blood from self-inflicted stab wounds, police said.

BRICK, NJ — A Brick Township man remains hospitalized Monday after he stabbed himself with a hunting knife and asked police to shoot him because he wanted to die, police said.

Anthony Veltry, 51, has been charged with aggravated assault and terroristic threats after the incident Saturday on Lime Road, Brick Township Police Capt. Timothy Boyle said.

Police were called to the home about 10:45 p.m. Saturday for a dispute where a woman was assaulted, Boyle said. Veltry was downstairs at the time police arrived and told police he had a gun, Boyle said.

Police kept talking to Veltry while setting up a perimeter, Boyle said. Eventually Veltry came to the front door of the home, where officers saw him holding a hunting knife with a 6-inch blade in one hand and a bottle of alcohol in the other, he said.

Veltry was covered in his own blood from self-inflicted stab wounds, Boyle said, and he came out of the home and sat on the front porch, holding the knife and drinking from the bottle.

Veltry then told police he never had a gun, just knives, and told the officers that he wanted to die and they should shoot him, Boyle said. Sgt. Peter Thomas, the department's crisis negotiator, arrived and continued to talk with Veltry, trying to encourage him to put the knife down.

"Veltry advised officers on scene that he was going to give them a show," Boyle said, and Veltry began to lightly poke the knife against his abdomen. A few minutes later Veltry dropped the knife and rolled onto his side, Boyle said.

Veltry was taken into custody and treated by emergency medical services on scene before being taken to an unspecified area hospital, Boyle said.

Veltry remains in custody at the hospital pending transport to Ocean County Jail, Boyle said.
