Brick Memorial Beats Manalapan 9-4 Before Heading to States

The Mustangs got back on track with a 9-4 win against Manalapan

The win didn’t mean much for the standings, but it was a very important win for the Mustangs right before the State Playoffs start on Monday. With the win, it gets the Mustangs back on track after dropping a pair of games in a row.

Senior Dave Clark started for the Mustangs and picked up the win, going four innings, allowing three runs, walking two, and giving up six hits.

Memorial jumped out to an early lead on a RBI single from Clark, who drove in Senior Andrew LaRosa in the top of the 1st inning.

Manalapan went up 2-1 in the bottom of the 1st inning off of Clark. Jake Sadowitz had an RB single and Chris Rodriquez hit a sac fly.

In the top of the 2nd inning the Mustangs put up six runs and never looked back for the rest of the game. After Senior Teddy Gonzalez reached on an error, Senior Justin Bates doubled to advance Gonzalez to third base. Senior Dylan Evans was hit by a pitch to load the bases and LaRosa walked to bring in a run. After another hit by pitch made it 3-2, Evans scored on a wild pitch. Senior James Donlon delivered a two run double for the Mustangs and came around to score to make it a 7-2 lead for Memorial.

After Manalapan made it 7-3 in the bottom of the 2nd inning, Memorial came right back to add to their lead 8-3 in the top of the 3rd inning. Gonzalez doubled to start off the inning and then traded spots with Bates, as he doubled in Gonzalez.

Memorial picked up their final run in the top of the 7th inning as Gonzalez doubled to add to an impressive day at the plate and later came around to score.

The Mustangs racked up 11 hits as a team and Gonzalez, Bates, and Clark led the way to the victory. Bates finished 3-3, with two doubles and an RBI. Gonzalez went 2-4, with a pair of doubles and Clark picked up a double and a single while driving in one run.

Memorial used three pitchers to finish the last three innings of the game. Junior Ray Lutick and Sophomore Nick Stephan both threw a scoreless inning. Senior DJ Wilson closed it out for the Mustangs in the last inning.

The Mustangs will travel to play Millville for the opening round of the State Playoffs, Monday at 4:00 P.M.
