Brick Memorial Falls to Freehold Township in Extra Innings

Freehold Township pulled off an impressive win against Brick Memorial winning by a final score of 5-4 in 10 innings.

The game remained scoreless up until the 4th inning when Freehold scored the first run of the game on an RBI single by their starting pitcher, Junior Mike Pirrotta to make it a 1-0 game.

The Mustangs answered right back to tie the game in the bottom of the 4th inning when Senior Matt Cuppari hit a solo home run over the center field fence.

Starting for the Mustangs was Senior Noah DeAlmeida who went 4 1/3 innings only allowing two runs, three hits, and striking out six batters.

With the bases loaded and only one out in the top of the 5th inning, Senior Andrew LaRosa came into pitch for Memorial. Sophomore Ryan Ford hit a sac fly to take the lead 2-1 for Freehold. Brick Memorial’s Senior Tim Santiago made a spectacular diving catch in center field on the next batter to keep the score the same.

Brick Memorial took the lead in the bottom of the 6th inning when Senior Brian Markoski doubled to lead off the inning and stole third on a strike out by Senior Dylan Evans. Cuppari reached first on a hit by pitch. Markoski scored on a groundout by Senior James Donlon to tie the game. Cuppari was able to score on a pass ball to take the lead 3-2.

Memorial brought in Junior Ray Lutick to close the game out in the top of the 7th inning, but was unable to as Freehold tied the game up on a single by Ford.

The game headed to extra innings and after a scoreless 8th inning Freehold took the lead 4-3 in the top of the 9th inning. Joe Romanowski doubled with one out and scored on a single by Junior Nick Coluccio.

The game looked to be over as Brick Memorial was down to their last out with a runner on first base and Markoski hit a fly ball to the right fielder, who missed played the fly ball allowing Memorial to tie the game up 4-4.

Senior Dave Clark took over on the mound for Lutick and gave up a lead off triple down the right field line to Senior Brian Oliver. Senior John Carroll singled in Oliver to give Freehold a 5-4 lead.

Memorial was able to get the tying run on third base in the bottom of the 10th inning, but Sophomore Bryan Reed struck out Memorial’s Lutick to end the game and pick up the win for Freehold. Reed went four innings in relief, only allowing one hit and one earned run.

Memorial’s Markoski finished the day with two hits, as did Senior Dylan Nolan. Shortstop Matt Cuppari went 1 for 2 with a home run.

Freehold only picked up their second win of the season and Memorial’s record falls to 9-3.

Memorial is back in action tonight at 7:00 P.M. at BlueClaws FirstEnergy Stadium in Lakewood against cross–town rival Brick Township Dragons.
