Brick Police, Prosecutor Holding Gun Turn-In Program

The police department says this is not a buy-back event, but is for those who have decided they want the guns out of their homes.

BRICK, NJ — The Brick Township Police Department and Ocean County Prosecutor's office are holding a Gun Turn-In event at the Brick Township Police Department on Saturday, May 5.

"This is NOT a buyback ‘no questions asked’ event," the police department said in a post on Facebook. "This is a collaborative effort being carried out by the Brick Township Police Department and the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office whose objective is to have safer communities."

The hope, the police department said, is that residents who have firearms and no longer want them will turn them in for authorities to dispose of them.

"Guns left lying around the home are a common source of tragedy," the Facebook post noted. "A gun that is turned in can never be stolen in a burglary and used later in a violent crime, and it can never fall into the hands of a curious child and cause the death of that child, a friend, or some other innocent person."

The event runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Brick Township Police Department at 401 Chambersbridge Road.

Anyone bringing a firearm to turn in needs to transport it unloaded in a closed, fastened case, in a gun box or in a securely tied package, and locked in the trunk of your car during transit, police said.
