BRICK, NJ — The Brick Township School District will be closing for two weeks amid the growing concerns about the spread of the new coronavirus, district officials said Saturday.

The district will start its remote learning on Monday, Superintendent Thomas Farrell said in a notice on the Brick Schools' website.

"Given the governor’s message on the inevitability of directed school closings, and after consultation with the executive county superintendent as well as the Ocean County Health Department on the increased activity of the coronavirus, we will be closing schools Monday, March 16th and anticipate being closed through Friday, March 27th," he said.

Farrell said the district will continue to monitor the situation and make additional decisions as events warrant. The closure is an effort to be proactive in combating the spread of COVID-19.

There are 50 cases of COVID-19 in New Jersey as of Friday, with one death, a Bergen County man. A Manchester Township man, who was among the new cases announced by state health officials Friday, is the first Ocean County resident with a presumptive positive test.

Presumptive positive means the person tested positive in state labs. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ultimately confirms the test. So far, 100 percent of the state's positive tests have been confirmed.

COVID-19 is caused by a member of the coronavirus family that's a close cousin to the SARS and MERS viruses that have caused outbreaks in the past. Read more: NJ Coronavirus Updates: Here's What You Need To Know
