Brick Schools Fill A Bus With Hurricane Relief Supplies

BRICK, NJ — In response to the devastation in Texas and Florida left by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, students, staff and families of Brick Township's elementary schools filled a bus with hurricane relief supplies and sent it south.

"While our students in Brick Township were eagerly preparing for school to start, August and September delivered two devastating hurricanes, Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma, to the Gulf Coast region of the United States. Over 15 million people have been affected in the continental United States and Caribbean islands, and many are now left with only the clothing on their backs," the district said in a news release.

"It was not that many years ago that our very own area was deeply devastated by Superstorm Sandy, so not only can we sympathize, but we can also empathize for those suffering and displaced," officials said.

The district partnered with OnCourse Systems for Education and shared the “Fill the Bus” initiative with the district's elementary schools. In response, families sent in bags and boxes of essential items.

"Thanks to the enthusiasm of building principals, staff, PTAs, PTOs and the generosity of the students’ families, we are proud to send down all of the items that were listed on the “Fill the Bus” flyer," the release said.

"It is with our best wishes that we send all of these supplies and we will also be sure to keep those affected in our hearts and thoughts," officials said.

The eight elementary schools include:

• Herbertsville Elementary Bonnie Giles, Principal
• Lanes Mill Elementary Jeffrey Luckenbach, Principal
• Midstreams Elementary John Billen, Principal
• Osbornville Elementary Kathleen DiGrigoli, Principal
• Warren H. Wolf Elementary Theresa Goodfellow, Principal
• Veterans Memorial Elementary Lynn Coddington, Interim Principal
