Brick Schools Make Christmas Merry For 160 Families

For the ninth year, volunteers worked with the Salvation Army to match donations to needy families and students.

BRICK, NJ -- The Brick Township schools students and staff have pulled together to make Christmas happy for 160 township families.

For the ninth straight year, the district, working in concert with the Salvation Army, collected toys and clothing for the families, then on Sunday volunteers helped to bag the items for the families.

The gifts will go to 500 district students, school officials said.

“We are a school community that gives each and every day, but most importantly, in times of need,” Interim Superintendent Richard Caldes said.

Brett Novick, a social worker for the school district, coordinated the event and the volunteers, who included faculty, staff and families throughout the district, as well as members of the Brick Memorial Wrestling Team and the National Honor Society, officials said.

The occasion involved a great deal of community participation both in the form of time, as well as donations.

Helpers unloaded toys, clothing, and gifts from several trucks and organized the toys and clothes and then went
about bagging the donations for each family throughout the day.

“Those involved showed firsthand the true meaning of the season, teamwork and citizenship,” Novick said.
