Brick Students' 'Souper Bowl' Helps St. Dom's Food Pantry

Fifth graders help their community

This weekend's big game will prove to be a big help for one of Brick's service organizations, thanks to some of the township's youngest residents.

All last week, fifth graders at Midstreams Elementary School hosted a "Souper Bowl" drive that collected food for St. Dominic's Food Pantry. Students from the school’s Early Act Club and Junior Jags, both 5th grade service clubs, challenged their peers to suport their Super Bowl favorite and back up their rooting interest with a donation to the food pantry.

The contest asked students to bring in cans of soup to support the team they want to win the Super Bowl - the New York Giants or the New England Patriots.  Every day the cans were hidden to keep the winner a mystery from the student body. Fifth graders from the clubs have been featured on the morning announcements and during the lunch periods to generate excitement about the project, according to Dina Silvestri, the school district's community relations officer.

No matter which team wins on Sunday, of course, St. Dominic's will benefit from all of the cans of soup donated in favor of each NFL team.
