After multiple rain outs, the Mustangs were finally able to get on the field for their second round showdown against the Dragons, their cross-town rival.

Things didn’t go the Mustangs way, as they were eliminated from the County Tournament, losing 12-5 to the Dragons.

The dragons got on the board right away against Senior Alec Merritt in the 1st inning. Junior John Prato led off the game by reaching second base on an error. Prato scored on the next play when Junior Mike Soldo flew out to right field and Memorial’s Senior Brian Markoski threw the ball away allowing Prato to score.

Starting on the mound for the Dragons was Senior Nic Chirichello. Memorial had a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the 1st inning when Senior Dylan Evans doubled with one out. Chirichello retired the next two hitters to get out of the inning.

In the top of the 3rd inning, the Dragons added to their lead by scoring two runs. With one out, Prato singled followed by a double from Soldo. Junior AJ Serrino singled to bring in Prato. The lead moved to 4-0, on a sac fly by Junior Patrick McAlinden.

The game got out of hand in the top of the 4th inning, as the Dragons scored six runs to make it a 9-0 ball game. Senior Jake Scott doubled to lead things off and scored on a double by Senior Trevor Rowe. With the bases loaded and still nobody out, Chirichello helped himself out with a two run single. Prato tripled to right field, scoring another two runs and he later scored on a pass ball to make it 9-0.

After a walk to Soldo, Merritt was taken out of the game and Junior Ray Lutick entered the game.

With a 9-0 lead, the dragons took out Chirichello after retiring the side in the bottom of the 4th inning. He finished the night throwing four scoreless innings, allowing only one hit, and striking out seven hitters. Soldo took over in relief to start the 5th inning.

The Mustangs cut the lead to six runs in the bottom of the 5th inning, making it a 9-3 ball game. Senior Dave Clarke and Senior Teddy Gonzalez both singled to start off the inning. Senior Justin Bates drove in Clarke with a single to right field to score their first run of the game. With no outs and the bases loaded, Markoski walked to make it 9-2. The Mustangs scored another run on a sac fly by Senior Matt Cuppari.

The Dragons put the game out of reach by scoring three runs in the top of the 7th inning to make it 12-3. The Mustangs added two runs in the bottom of the 7th inning, but fell to the Dragons with a final score of 12-5.

With the loss, the Mustangs record falls to 10-6. Memorial’s next scheduled game is on Tuesday, as they will take on the Dragons again at the Lakewood Blueclaws’ FirstEnergy Park. The game will start at 7:00 P.M.
