Civil War Re-enactment Set For Brick School Friday

The historical presentation will include the sound of gunshots, and police are urging residents to be aware and not panic.

BRICK, NJ — If you hear gunshots in the vicinity of Veterans Memorial Middle School on Friday, Brick Township police say there will be no reason for worry: The school is hosting a Civil War re-enactment, police said.

In a Nixle alert Thursday afternoon, police said the event is scheduled to run from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

"There will be sounds of gun shots during the event," the alert said.

Veterans Memorial Middle School Principal Renee Kotsianas said the program has been held at the middle school for about 15 years and gives the school's sixth-graders, whose Social Studies curriculum includes the war, more insight into the way soldiers lived during the Civil War.

The re-enactment includes presentations on the shelters soldiers used at their encampments, the way and type of foods they cooked, and how they responded to medical emergencies in the field, Kotsianas said.
