Concerned About Crime? Join Brick's Neighborhood Watch

A meeting for residents in the Herbertsville area is coming up.

BRICK, NJ -- Back in the late 1970s and 1980s, there were eyeballs everywhere -- giant blue-and-white ones. The kind that stared out from signs warning that a neighborhood watch program was in effect.

In some areas, those neighborhood watch programs disappeared -- the casualty, often, of changing neighborhoods where people moved out and new residents moved in, as well as the change in lifestyles, with people much more on the go.

In Brick, residents' concerns about safety have led to the revival of the program.

The first area being addressed: the neighborhoods around Herbertsville Park.

Members of the Brick Township CERT (Citizens Emergency Response Team) program, as well as council members and others have been going house to house, announcing the program and trying to get residents to take part.

There have been several residents who have joined the effort already, officials said.

If you want to get involved, there is a meeting April 30 at the Herbertsville Fire House, on Herbertsville Road. The meeting begins at 9 a.m.
