Teen Charged With Hit-And-Run In Crash That Killed Brick Memorial Student

The student charged was driving at high speed when he hit the student, who was crossing on a bicycle in a crosswalk, authorities said.

BRICK, NJ — A Brick Memorial student died Tuesday morning after he was hit by a speeding car as he rode his bicycle across the Lanes Mill Road in a crosswalk about a half-mile from school, authorities said.

The teen driving the car has been charged with knowingly leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash resulting in death, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer said.

The prosecutor's office did not release the driver's name because he is a minor, Billhimer said. It was not immediately clear whether he is a student at Brick Memorial as well.

The student who was killed has not been identified.

The prosecutor's office said the crash happened about 6:50 a.m. on Lanes Mill Road. The teen riding the bicycle was crossing Lanes Mill westbound at Rhode Island Avenue when he was hit by a 2021 BMW that authorities said was traveling at high speed as it headed north on Lanes Mill.

The bicyclist died at the scene.

The driver did not stop and try to render aid or notify law enforcement, the prosecutor's office said, and authorities determined the driver was a minor.

He is being held at the Ocean County Juvenile Detention Center, Billhimer said.

The Brick Township School District confirmed the death Tuesday morning saying, "This morning there was an accident that resulted in a tragedy for Brick Schools. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the student."

"This is an incredibly sad and tragic event for our community and we need to support one another during this difficult time," the statement said.

Parents of other Brick Memorial students who contacted Patch said their children, who knew the student, were distraught and came home from school immediately.

The district said it has grief counseling and support services available for all students and staff.

Lanes Mill Road was closed for several hours during the investigation.
