Dan Kelly, Former Brick Mayor, Dies

Kelly was appointed to serve in the wake of the resignation of Joseph Scarpelli

Daniel J. Kelly, who served as mayor of Brick Township for a year, has died, according to a post on the Township of Brick Municipal Government Facebook page.

Kelly, a Democrat, was appointed mayor in January 2007, in the wake of the resignation of former Mayor Joseph Scarpelli, who later pleaded guilty to accepting bribes and served time in federal prison.

He ran for election that year to fill the remainder of Scarpelli’s term, but was defeated by Republican Stephen Acropolis.
At the end of his term, Kelly told the Brick Township Bulletin that during his brief term, he enjoyed the people, but not the politics, which he described as ugly.

“My goal is getting along with people,” Kelly said. “I enjoyed the people and I particularly enjoyed the schools.”

Kelly and his wife of nearly 50 years, Gerri, have three sons and several grandchildren.
