Details On Nor'easter Forecast Released

National Weather Service says heavy rain, winds and even snow still possible next week in New Jersey.

Forecasters say a nor’easter could still hit New Jersey next week.

The National Weather Service in Mount Holly, however, says the main impacts are likely to stay offshore.

The system could bring the potential for rain, which will develop along the Carolinas on Monday and then skirt along the mid-Atlantic and New England coasts into Tuesday, according to AccuWeather.

How closely this system brushes the coast will determine how far inland the rain extends. The most likely case is that main impacts remain confined to the coast, according to the weather service.

Lance Frank, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, says the storm “looks more like a rainmaker than a snowmaker,” but could deliver heavy precipitation and winds on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Gary Szatkowski, the meteorologist-in-charge for the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, says there is still considerable uncertainty, but did say on Twitter that the potential for a coastal storm is “on the increase.”

Frank said a disturbance in the jet stream is causing storms along the Pacific Coast, but could lead to developing an area of low pressure in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. From there, forecast models say a storm could develop up the coast.

If that low-pressure system combines with the cold air from the Great Lakes, we could have our first snow - combined with wet and wind, he said.

“It remains to be seen if that tracks up the coast,” he said.
