Dragons Roundup: Wrestlers Set for SCT Opener

The Brick wrestling team is on a roll, winning five matches in the last week, putting the Dragons in a good rhythm heading into the Shore Conference Tournament.The Dragons (14-3) won three matches in a quad last weekend at Middletown South, beating the host Eagles 41-21; defeating Marlboro 47-18 and Toms River East, 39-19. Brick, which received the sixth seed, wrestles 11th-seeded Matawan on Thursday in the SCT Round of 16 at Howell. The Dragons face the Huskies at 5 p.m., with the winner advancing to the quarterfinal match at 7 p.m.

The Dragons, who are undefeated in Class B South, have also beaten Long Branch (28-26) and Raritan (33-18). Against Long Branch, Dan Wojtaszek pinned Arturos Rios at 170 and Dan Watson scored a 6-0 decision over Nick Mazza, giving Brick a five-point lead going into the final bout, where Anthony Dzugan stayed off his back, surrendering just a 3-0 decision to Khalid Muhammed at 195, giving Brick the victory.

In boys basketball: The Dragons have continued to struggle this season, and are on a five-game losing streak, including a 52-25 loss to Lacey on Tuesday. James Walker has been the Dragons' most consistent scorer, leading Brick's offense in each of the last three games. Brick faces Barnegat on Friday at home.

In girls basketball: Brick's girls have strugged as well, falling to 1-14 with a 50-42 loss to Lacey on Tuesday. The Dragons' only win so far this season came against Point Beach, 47-34. Brianna Page led the Dragons in scoring with 17 points in the win.

In ice hockey: The Dragons have won three of their last four games, including 6-1 wins over Toms River South and Jackson Memorial, and they tied Middletown South on Sunday, 4-4. The tie with Middletown South keeps Brick in third place in the Shore Conference B Division, one point behind the Eagles.

In swimming: At the Ocean County Championships at the Ocean County YMCA, sophomore Sidney Sherman won the 100-yard breaststroke and was third in the 200 individual medley for the girls' only top 10 finishes. The boys had no top 10 finishes.
