The officer was having lunch at a Howell restaurant and stepped in to save the elderly man's life.

HOWELL, NJ -- An off-duty Lakewood police officer saved the life of an elderly man who was choking at a Howell restaurant, according to a report.

The Lakewood Scoop reported Officer Stephen Meyer was having lunch at the Applebee's in Howell when he saw the restaurant manager and another person run over to the man, who appeared to be about 80 years old.

The two tried to perform the Heimlich Maneuver but were unable to dislodge the food, and that's when Meyer stepped in, identifying himself as a police officer, the report said.
