Emma Havens PTA Color Run Aims To Fill Classrooms' Libraries

This year's PTA fundraiser has a specific goal of filling rooms with books for students to borrow. Donated books are welcomed too.

BRICK, NJ — Break out your white T-shirts and get ready to run: The Emma Havens Young PTA's Color Run returns May 30 at the elementary school on Drum Point Road.

The color run is an annual fundraiser, and this year the PTA is on a special mission: to build up the individual classroom libraries at the school.

PTA organizers said Emma Havens principal David Kasyan has made it a goal to see to it there are adequate, age-appropriate books made available to all students all of the time. Right now, students attend library once a week, which allows them to borrow a book. But that's not seen as adequate by Kasyan or by many parents, the PTA officials said.

That's why the PTA is trying to create a classroom library in each classroom, so students will have the opportunity to take home a new book each day, thus introducing them to new material all of the time.

In addition, the PTA is asking for donations of books, both new and gently used; they can be brought to the school the day of the race, even if you're not planning to join in the run.

The event has received a boost from DASH Mechanical, a Brick Township business that also participates in the Buy In Brick program, the PTA said.

Sign-in for the race is at 4:30 p.m. on May 30 and the race begins at 5:30 p.m.. There is a $15 fee per runner; those would like to support the event but don't want to run can purchase shirts.

The one-mile color run event includes a professional Zumba dance warm-up by DS Fitness, live radio broadcasting through B98.5 FM including the prize wheel, amazing photo props, Kona ice truck along with PLAYA BOWLS offering us healthy snacks. In addition, we have professional face painters coming from FANTASY FACE & BODY decorating our guests.

The coloring material used is cornstarch blended with coloring agents that are FDA approved and made in the United States. No lead-based colorants are used, the race organizers said.

"Easy clean-up — cornstarch will not stain skin, hair, clothing," but organizers urge race participants to bring a towel to sit on or clean off with before their ride home. Participants also are urged to take precautions to protect their electronics during the race.
