STORM ALERT: Extra Cops, DWI Checkpoints For Snow, Ice Storm After Super Bowl

State Police will have increased patrols statewide to tackle DWIs after Super Bowl - just when the snow-and-ice storm is supposed to hit.

In addition to normal patrols, extra troopers will be deployed across the state Sunday and Monday. Troopers will focus on DWI, as well as aggressive driving, distracted driving, speeding, seatbelt, and commercial vehicle enforcement, the State Police said.

Winter Storm Linus is expected to blanket much of New Jersey and Pennsylvania with snow, ice and rain on Sunday, impacting the Monday morning commute.

The National Weather Service has issued a “Winter Storm Warning,” saying a “significant” storm could possibly dump up to three to nine inches of snow in New Jersey and parts of eastern Pennsylvania, and much rain, sleet and snow in South Jersey.

“A good coach will prepare before a game,” said Lieutenant Colonel Patrick Callahan, Deputy Superintendent of Operations of the New Jersey State Police. “If you are traveling to a party where you will be drinking alcohol, plan ahead and make arrangements to stay where you are, or have a taxi or car service bring you home.”

The storm warning remains in effect from Sunday evening at 7 p.m. - during the Super Bowl - through Monday afternoon at 1 p.m. There is the potential for one-tenth to one-quarter inch of ice, according to the National Weather Service.

There will be hazardous travel conditions on Sunday night and Monday. Monday morning’s commute may be particularly difficult, according to the National Weather Service.

This Winter Storm Warning means there is a potential for significant snow, sleet or ice accumulations that may impact travel.This Super Bowl weekend effort is part of a larger program of DWI enforcement in the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign, which is coordinated by the New Jersey State Police and the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration.
