Fiery Crash Kills 2 People In Ocean County, Police Say

Police tried to rescue the people inside but were unable to get them out, authorities said.

JACKSON, NJ — Two people were killed early Sunday when an SUV ran off the road and hit a tree then caught fire in Jackson, police said.

The identities of the victims had not been confirmed as of Monday morning, Jackson Lt. Edward Travisano said.

The crash happened shortly after midnight Sunday on Hyson Road. Travisano said police initially received reports of a transformer down but soon learned about the crash.

Police arrived to find a black 2023 Toyota Highlander engulfed in flames, he said.

Officers tried to rescue the two people inside but were not able to get them out, he said. They were pronounced dead at the scene after the fire was extinguished.

Hyson Road was closed from Cook Road to Colts Court for several hours.

The crash is under investigation by the Jackson Police Traffic Safety Unit. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is asked to contact Police Officer Matthew Kalbach at 732-928-1111.
