House Fire Kills Family Dog In Brick: Police

Breaking: A resident told authorities a lit cigarette rolled under a bed and he couldn't put the flames out, police said.

BRICK, NJ — A pet dog died but no humans were injured in when a fire significantly damaged a home off Princeton Avenue on Monday night, police said.

Flames were coming from the spare bedroom of the home at 5 North Cherokee Lane when Brick Township Patrolmen Foley, Scott, Docherty and Gordon responded to the fire call that came in just before 10 p.m., Brick Township Police Capt. Timothy Boyle said.

The bedroom's windows were beginning to break and heavy smoke was pouring from the windows and the front door, he said.

All of the residents had eveacuated the house, but the family's pet dog, which was found inside the home, died after resuscitation efforts failed, Boyle said.

Laurelton Fire Company responded and extinguished the fire, he said, assisted by the Herbertsville, Breton Woods, and Pioneer Hose fire companies, plus Point Pleasant Beach Fire Company 2, and Point Pleasant Fire Department Station 75.

A resident told authorities he was smoking in a spare bedroom when he dropped a cigarette underneath a bed. The bed and mattress caught fire, and the resident said he was unable to extinguish the fire, Boyle said.

The home sustained substantial damage, he said.

Brick Detectives Waldhelm and Leskowski and Brick Township Fire Marshal Frank Beshears are investigating, Boyle said.
