The snow is still falling in some areas, but reports are coming in to the National Weather Service of snow totals. Brick is among the towns reporting the highest totals so far, with 6 inches of snow.
Plowing is in progress, and Brick officials are hoping things go more smoothly today than they did Sunday, when the extreme temperatures caused the salt solution to freeze and jam the spreaders on the township’s trucks, according to Mayor John Ducey. Five of the township’s 10 salt spreaders broke down during the work on Sunday, he said, and as of Monday afternoon one truck was still being repaired.

Some residents complained on social media Sunday about delays in seeing plows and icy conditions on the streets.
“All streets were pretreated before the snow started to fall on Saturday,” Ducey said. “Once the snow was over the salt trucks were sent back out.” And plows had been on all 1,700 of the township’s streets by 9:30 p.m., he said.

The extreme temperatures, however, reduced the effectiveness of the salt solution, especially on less-traveled streets.
“The salt only ‘warms’ the temperature 10 to 15 degrees,” he said via email. “So if it is 10 degrees, the salt solution makes it 20 to 25, which is below freezing, and therefore nothing melts.”
Police are encouraging residents to stay home if they don’t absolutely need to go out, to allow the crews to work.
