Lady Dragons Come Up Short Against Toms River East

Hardy and McDede lead Dragons in scoring.

The Brick Girls Basketball Team failed to reduce costly turnovers in route to losing their third game in a row by a score of 56-30 Thursday.

“It was a poor effort by our team, we had too many turnovers and we didn’t really box out, we were off our game today,” said Brick Head Coach Christy McCullough.

Despite having a distinct size advantage, Brick could not answer a high tempo Raider offense which went on an early run in route to an 11-4 first quarter score following a number of jump shots.

As the half neared, Brick went inside the paint to their tallest weapon, Caitlin McDede, who put them back into the game. McDede’s four, second-quarter points led the Dragons on a 6-1 run to put the game at 39-24 going into the half.

“We run most of our plays for Caitlin and Shanice,” said McCullough. “She (McDede) kind of took herself out of the game, she was missing shots, focusing on [the defense] and not really playing her game,” said McCollough.

A bright spot in an otherwide bleak loss, however, was the continued success of guard Shanice Hardy. Hardy, coming off a 20 point performance, tried to will her team back into the game in the late third and fourth quarters with a number of drives through the heart of the Raider defense.

“We were trying to come back, but it wasn’t good enough, we were off our game,” said Hardy, who finished with 14 points on the night.

“We went into a zone [in the second half], we were hoping not to give up easy shots, [it was] too little too late,” said McCullough.

The Dragons dropped to 10-12 on the season as they head into a matchup with Toms River North on Monday.

“We’ve got to regroup we’ve got to have a good practice this weekend and hopefully we can put our stuff together,” said McCullough.
