Lakehurst Man Slashed Roommate With Box Cutter At Stop Light, Brick Police Say

The victim told police the two got into an argument while they were stopped at a light on Route 70.

A Lakehurst man who police say slashed another man with a box cutter during an argument in a vehicle at a stoplight on Route 70 on Friday was arrested Monday in Belmar, Brick police said Wednesday.

William Hunter III, 26, of Oak Street, Lakehurst, was charged at Brick Township Police Headquarters with aggravated assault, possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, Sgt. Larry Petrola said.

Police were called to the intersection of Route 70 and Olden Street for a report of an assault that happened in a vehicle, Petrola said.

The victim told officers that he had argued with Hunter, who was his roommate, while they were stopped at the traffic light, and during the argument Hunter slashed at the victim with a box cutter, cutting him on the neck and forearm, Petrola said. The man was taken to Ocean Medical Center, where he was treated and released, he said.

Hunter fled before police arrived, Petrola said, and officers checked the area but were not able to find Hunter.

Detective Thomas Cooney investigated and was able to find Hunter in Belmar on Monday, Petrola said. Hunter was arrested and taken to Brick police headquarters.

Municipal Court Judge Robert Lepore set Hunter’s bail at $50,000, no 10 percent option, and he was taken to the Ocean County Jail, where he remained Wednesday night, according to jail records.

Ocean County Corrections records reflect and additional charge of a threat to kill someone, with an additional $10,000 bail on that charge.
