Letter To The Editor: Mantoloking Road Grass Maintenance Endangers Brick Residents
The writer says the county road right-of-way should be maintained by the county, not 60- and 70-year-olds with weed whackers.

Dear Editor:
Two years ago, the Ocean County freeholders decided that they would not maintain the property outside of our fences on Mantoloking Road. It is county property as they bought it from homeowners many years ago.
Now, property owners have to get out on Mantoloking Road to cut grass, weeds, etc! It is so dangerous.

Plus, there are many residents in their 60’s and 70’s who live on this road. It is very difficult to do. Most cords aren’t long enough and multiple extensions are needed for electric weed whackers, etc. Most of us don’t have fence gates; therefore you have to throw the cord over the fence and walk around the block, with clippers, weed whackers, bags, weed treatment etc.
However, the worst part is the danger of being hit by a vehicle. I was almost hit by a truck early this morning.

When finished, you have to carry everything around the block back to your home.
You get a warning that you will get a summons if you don’t do it by a certain date. Grass/weeds can’t be
over 10 inches high. My neighbors and I were not even close. If you don’t comply, the fine is $2,000.
It is awful and if someone gets killed or hurt out there, they will have the biggest lawsuit Brick and Ocean County has ever seen. I don’t think a lot of people know this is going on!
