Lifeguards On Training Run Rescue Girl, 10, From Rip Current: Report

The girl was in a stretch of water in Brick that isn't heavily guarded; the lifeguards, from a Toms River beach, swam out to get her.

BRICK, NJ — A 10-year-old girl was pulled from a rip current Monday afternoon by a pair of lifeguards who were on a training run and heard her calling for help, according to a report.

The Asbury Park Press reported the lifeguards, Matt Schwartz and Brett Tusinac, both 19, were running north on the sand a little before 4 p.m. when they heard the girl calling for help, ran into the ocean and swam about 50 yards out to pull her to shore.

The two are guards in the Chadwick Beach section of Toms River and had run about a mile north into Brick, according to the report, which said the rescue took place on a section of beach between the Ocean Club at Mantoloking — which sits on the site of the old Thunderbird Hotel — and Deauville Beach.

Deauville Beach has lifeguards through a contract between the beach association and Brick Township, but the stretch of beach where the rescue occurred is not specifically assigned lifeguards because it's in front of privately owned homes.

The girl was not seriously injured and was not taken to the hospital, the report said.
