Man Charged In Armed Robbery At Brick Exxon; Attendant Injured, Police Said

He was found walking along the road in different clothing; the clothes from the robbery were found in the woods thanks to a resident's call.

BRICK, NJ — A Rahway man has been charged with aggravated assault and robbery after a gas station employee was injured during an armed robbery in Brick on Friday night, Brick police said.

Zakry Shrivers, 24, of Rahway, was arrested Friday night in connection with the robbery of the Exxon station at the corner of Drum Point Road and Hooper Avenue, Brick Sgt. Neal Pedersen said Saturday.

The robbery happened shortly before 5 p.m., Pedersen said, when a black male about 6 feet tall wearing a black ball cap, gray sweatshirt, and tan camo pants, walked up to an attendant as he was sitting in his booth, showed a knife and demanded all the money.

During the altercation, the attendant suffered a cut in the area of his thumb from the blade of the knife, Pedersen said. The suspect, identified as Shrivers, got the money from the attendant but dropped it as he began to leave, Pedersen said. The suspect picked up the money and then ran east on Drum Point Road through the Encore Dental parking lot, Pedersen said.

Brick Police EMS treated the attendant at the scene and took him to Ocean Medical Center, Brick, for further treatment, Pedersen said.

Police were called at 5:02 p.m., and while officers spoke with the attendant and witnesses and checked video surveillance, others including members of the Ocean County Sheriff's Department K-9 Unit, began searching for the suspect.

While Officer Mark Storch was checking the surrounding area, he located a man matching the physical description of the suspect on Katie Lynn Court near Circle Drive, Pedersen said. The man — identified as Shrivers — was sweating profusely, but his clothing did not exactly match the description given by the attendant, Pedersen said.

As the search was going on, a resident from the Cherry Quay development called police headquarters and reported seeing a man in the woods near Cherry Quay Road changing his clothes, Pedersen said. Officers went to the spot and found clothing in the woods that the man, Shrivers, had left behind and that matched the description given of the robber, Pedersen said.

Brick Detective Joseph Leskowski was briefed by officers on what happened, and after Shrivers was identified by witnesses as the robber, was arrested by Leskowski and taken to police headquarters for processing, Pedersen said.

Shrivers was charged with robbery, aggravated assault, possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and burglary armed with a weapon, Pedersen said. He was taken to the Ocean County Jail, where he was being held as of Saturday under the guidelines of bail reform.
