BRICK, NJ — A Lakewood man is hospitalized in critical condition following a crash Thursday afternoon on Route 70, Brick Township police said Friday.

Vincent C. Grillo, 83, suffered a visible head injury and internal injuries and was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune after the crash, which happened about 3:25 p.m. near Morris Avenue, Brick Sgt. Jim Kelly said.

Grillo was driving east on Route 70 in a silver 2020 Kia Sportage Thursday and hit the rear end of a black 2008 GMC 2500 operated by Michael J. Amogretti, 53, of Brick, who was stopped for a red traffic signal at Morris Avenue. The force of the collision caused the GMC to hit the rear of a white 2019 Subaru Crosstrek driven by Richard S. Crue, 75, of the Allenwood section of Wall.

Amogretti told first responders he had chest pain and he was treated by Brick Township Emergency Medical Services at the scene, Kelly said. Crue was not injured, he said.

Kelly said someone called police prior to the crash and reported seeing the Kia failing to maintain its lane in the area of Route 88. The caller told police the Kia hit the concrete divider on Route 70 at Olden Street but kept going, running the red light at Jack Martin Boulevard before hitting the GMC, Kelly said.
