Mary Capone-Cotten, 87, Helped Found Brick Organizations
The mother of former Mayor Steven Acropolis died Monday.

Funeral services are set for tomorrow for Mary Cristina Capone-Cotten of Brick Township, who died Monday at home. She was 87.
Cotten, the mother of former mayor Steven Acropolis, was deeply involved with the town fafter she moved there in 1958, according to her obituary on the Asbury Park Press website.
Cotten was a deputy court clerk for the Brick Township Municipal Court, and according to the APP obituary, worked alongside Doris Campbell, ”and was very proud to have worked with the finest police officers in the state as well as some of the best township employees.

She also was involved with a number of civic organizations, helping to found the Brick Police Athletic League; the Brick Hospital Association, which helped raise the money to build what’s now Ocean Medical Center; and she was was actively involved in BMAC, Deborah, St. Dominic’s Roman Catholic Church, and DART.
In her early years, she helped start the Pop Warner Cheerleading squad with Barbara Bedrosian, the Brick Junior Sports League, and was an avid ice hockey fan of the New York Rangers, and later the New Jersey Devils as well as the Brick High School Hockey Team and the Brick Hockey Club.

Cotten loved to travel and had traveled to a number of places both in the United States in the world, with Italy and Hawaii being highlights. She also was an avid reader.
Cotten is survived by her three beloved children and their spouses, MaryAnn Brown; George Acropolis III and Roxanne; and Stephen Acropolis and Wendy, all of Brick Township. She was loved by her nine grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her two sisters, Anne Bragdon of MA, Gloria Arnold of British Columbia and her niece and four nephews and a great niece.
Services will be at Silverton Memorial Funeral Home, 2482 Church Road, Toms River, from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, with a memorial service at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. There will be a private cremation. For more information visit the funeral home website, www.silvertonmemorial.com.
