Man Shot, Robbed While Awaiting Payment For DJ Services In New Jersey: Police

The man had worked an event in Howell, then was told to drive to a Lakewood condo complex to be paid, police said.

LAKEWOOD, NJ — A Maryland man was shot and robbed early Thanksgiving morning when he went to a Lakewood condominium to collect payment after DJing an event in Howell, police said.

Lakewood Police Officer Vincent Wittman was called to Monmouth Medical Center's Southern Campus (formerly Kimball Medical Center) for a report of a gunshot victim who was dropped off, Detective Lt. Gregory Staffordsmith said.

The victim, a 23-year-old Maryland man, told Wittman he had been hired to DJ an event in Howell. After the event was over, the victim was told to meet at the High Point Condominium complex, at the corner of Massachusetts Avenue and Prospect Street, for payment, Staffordsmith said.

As the man, who was accompanied by a 23-year-old Lakewood woman, waited, they were approached as they sat in the car, the victim told Wittman. The suspects, described as two black males, opened the car door and demanded the belongings from the victim and the woman, he said.

When the victim refused to comply, one of the men shot him once in the abdomen, he told Wittman, Staffordsmith said.

After being wounded, the victim and the woman handed over their cell phones and his wallet, and the suspects fled, Staffordsmith said. The woman then drove the victim to the hospital, he said.

Staffordsmith said the victim was stable but was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center for further testing and treatment.

Staffordsmith said the investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is urged to contact Detective Charles Messer at 732-363-0200.
