BRICK, NJ — Just as you were getting used to using it again, the Midstreams Bridge will be closed on Monday, April 22, Ocean County officials announced.

But do not fret: it's a one-day closure, for the final paving and lane striping.

"We chose April 22 because area schools are closed and the traffic flow will be less," Ocean County Engineer John Ernst said.

Detours will be posted in the area. Ernst said the contractor, Midlantic Construction of Barnegat Township, will finish up any additional site work on April 22.

The new Midstreams Bridge was reopened to traffic on Feb. 19 following a year of construction to replace a nearly 60-year-old span with a 111-foot-long single span structure consisting of adjacent precast/prestressed concrete box beams, supported on full height reinforced concrete abutments, founded on cast-in-place steel pipe piles and concrete footings.

The new structure is 49 feet wide, with 40 feet curb-to-curb of travel lanes and a 6-foot-wide sidewalk on the west side.

Included in the work was the extensive installation of steel sheet bulkheading, revised roadway profile and upgraded guide rail.

The Midstreams Bridge was originally built in 1962. The existing timber piles and timber bulkhead substructure showed signs of advanced deterioration while the existing concrete pile caps exhibited delamination and moderate section loss.

"This new structure will serve our motorists and pedestrians for years to come," said Ocean County Freeholder Director Virginia E. Haines.
