New Sandy Grants Coming in December

New grants for low to moderate income homeowners and renters.

A new grant for reconstruction, rehabilitation and elevation will take applications for low to moderate income homeowners who did not participate in the RREM program. Applications will be available in December for the new grant. Eligibility is for those homeowners who had over $8,000 worth of damage to their primary residence or over one foot of water on the first floor. The homeowner must have registered with FEMA.

The income elegibility guidelines range by family size; for an Ocean County family of four the cutoff is $69,800.

The rental assistance has the same income guidelines. Applications will be available on December 1st, but must be filled out with a HUD certified housing counselor. The rental assistance is for legal residents not receiving any type of housing subsidy. Also tenants must either: previously received rental housing assistance from FEMA and the rental subsidy or rental unit are no longer available;
lived in one of the nine most impacted counties at the time of Superstorm Sandy; will live in one of the nine most impacted counties.

The rental unit must meet Section 8 Housing Quality Standards. Assistance is for 12 months, but may be renewed for an additional year. Those approved will pay approximately 30 percent of their monthly household gross income for rent and tenant-paid utilities.
