BRICK, NJ — New Jersey's 10th District will continue to be represented by Republicans, after Sen. James Holzapfel and Assemblymen Gregory McGuckin and John Catalano easily won re-election to the state Legislature.

The Associated Press declared Holzapfel the winner in the Senate race, where unofficial results have him with 69 percent of the vote over Democrat Emma Mammano. Holzapfel had received 51,938 votes to 22,895 for Mammano.

The 10th District includes Bay Head, Brick Township, Island Heights, Lakehurst, Lavallette, Manchester Township, Mantoloking, Point Pleasant Beach, Seaside Heights and Toms River.

Republicans have held the seats in the district continuously for more than 20 years.

Mammano mounted a spirited campaign, the first intensive effort in the district by a Democratic candidate for the Legislature in several years. It's a tall order for any Democrat in the district, however, because registered Republicans outnumber registered Democrats nearly 2 to 1, and unaffiliated voters in the county can be very fickle.

Holzapfel's term is two years, because it comes at the start of a new decade. New Jersey State Senate terms follow a 2-4-4 cycle, with a two-year term to start a decade and four-year terms back to back.
