NJSIAA Wrestling: Six From Brick, Brick Memorial In Quarterfinals

The five made it through Friday night's opening rounds of the individual championships in Atlantic City unscathed.

Six wrestlers from Brick Township will be seeking berths in the semifinals when they take the mats early this afternoon at the NJSIAA Wrestling Championships in Atlantic City.

Those wrestlers -- Gianni Ghione, Alec Donovan, Cliff Ruggiero and Nick Rivera from Brick Memorial High School, and Will Scott and Dean Sherry from Brick Township High School -- made it through Friday night’s opening rounds without losses.

Kyle Wojtasek of Brick, who was beaten friday night, fell in the wrestleback round Saturday morning.

Ghione, wrestling in the 113-pound class, beat Connor Cosgrove of Cherokee, 11-5, in the preliminary round Friday night, and Evan DeLuise of Don Bosco in the prequarterfinals with a 5-3 decision.

At 145 pounds, Donovan scored a 12-3 major decision over Kyle Cochran of Paramus in the prequarterfinals after earning a bye through the preliminaries.

Scott and Ruggiero both are in the 160-pound class, and opposite brackets and could potentially meet in the final if they both get that far. Scott won two bouts Friday, beating Joseph Prato of Whippany Park with a 13-3 major decision in the prelims and Daniel Kourakos of New Providence by a 15-3 major decision in the prequarterfinals. Ruggiero, meanwhile, had a bye in the opening round and pinned Kyle McIntyre of Lenape in the prequarters in 1:23.

Sherry had a bye in the 182-pound preliminaries, and scored a 16-2 major decision over Nick Suk of Hunterdon Central in the prequarters, and Rivera, who had a bye in the prelims at heavyweight, pinned Victor Rivera of Barringer in the prequarterfinals.
