BRICK, NJ — A brush fire that burned for about five hours Thursday night was contained to the marsh area off Mandalay Road, with no injuries reported and no property damage, Brick Township police said Friday.

The fire was reported just before 7 p.m. Thursday, police said, and firefighters were able to knock down most of the fire, but there were hotspots that continued to pop up over the course of the evening in the area of Cedar Island Drive and Mandalay Road.

The scene was cleared by midnight, and there were no injuries or damage to homes, police said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Officials with the state Department of Environmental Protection said information on the cause of Thursday's fire as well as Tuesday's fire likely would not be available until sometime next week because of the sheer number of brush fires and wildfires the New Jersey Forest Fire Service — the lead agency on the fires — is contending with statewide.

The Breton Woods, Pioneer Hose, Herbertsville and Laurelton Fire Companies responded, and received support from the Bay Head, Mantoloking, Howell, Ramtown, Silverton and Point Pleasant Beach Fire Companies. The New Jersey Forest Fire Service and the Brick Township Bureau of Fire Safety also responded, Brick police said in an update on the department's Facebook page with video and photos sent to them by residents.

"Chief David Forrester would like to thank all of the agencies and personnel who responded and worked to contain this fire," the police department said.
