Two people, including a Brick Township man, were killed in a fiery crash on the New Jersey Turnpike on Monday, according to New Jersey State Police and reports.

Christopher Calderone, 20, of Brick, and Rob Critelli, 21, of Summit, were killed in the crash that happened in the southbound lanes of the Turnpike near Back Creek Road, at milepost 12.6, around 5:25 p.m., police said.

The two were passengers in a Volkswagen Passat driven by Paul Fiorentino, 21, of Point Pleasant, according to police and NJ.com, that had stopped behind a Toyota Sienna driven by Igor Lougovtsov, 46, of Yarmouth, Maine. The left lane in that area was closed at the time and the closure was posted on highway signs, State Police said.

It’s not clear if they were trying to merge from the closed lane, police said.

According to police and reports on NJ.com and NBC10, the crash occurred when a Toyota Avalon, driven by Nishank Shaw, 24, of Woodbridge, failed to stop and hit the Passat, causing it to hit the Sienna and a concrete barrier before bursting into flames, according to the report.

Shaw, Fiorentino and Lougovtsov all were taken to hospitals for treatment of injuries, police and the reports said.

Calderone and Fiorentino were members of a rock band called Fated Endeavor, according to Nj.com. Formed in March of this year, their debut album, Chasing Sunlight, was released in July.

All southbound lanes were closed for several hours due to the crash, which remains under investigation, police said.
