Driver Charged In Herbertsville Pedestrian Hit-Run: Brick Police

Investigtors tracked down the vehicle and its owner; the man who was hit is hospitalized, police said.

BRICK, NJ — A Brick Township man has been charged in connection with a hit-and-run that left a man seriously injured early Wednesday morning, Brick Township police said Wednesday evening.

Michael Beilis, 75, of Brick, has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident causing serious injury and failure to report an accident, Brick Sgt. Neal Pedersen said.

Tyrone Stafford, 39, was the man who was struck and who was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, for treatment of a serious head injury, Pedersen said.

Police were called to Herbertsville Road about 250 feet north of Maple Avenue for a pedestrian hit by a vehicle, he said.

Investigators from the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, Ocean County Sheriff’s Department and Brick Township’s Traffic Safety Division gathered evidence that led them to believe it was a silver Ford made between 2005 through 2007, Pedersen said.

After an extensive search for the suspect vehicle in the Herbertsville area, Detective Brad Frank from the prosecutor's office and Brick Police Traffic Safety Officer Jay Lampiasi found what they believed to be the suspect vehicle at about 4 p.m., he said.

Shortly afterward they found Beilis, the owner of the vehicle, voluntarily went to headquarters to speak with investigators, Pedersen said.

Beilis was processed and released, he said.

Herbertsville Road was closed for five hours between Maple Avenue and Sawmill Road as a result of the incident, Pedersen said.
