Police: Skimming Device Found On Ocean First's ATM In Brick

Police are investigating the installation the device found Monday morning.

Brick Township police are warning customers and anyone who may have used the ATM machine at the Ocean First Bank on Brick Boulevard over the weekend to keep a close eye on their bank accounts, after a skimming device was found Monday morning.

Police were called to the bank at 724 Brick Boulevard about 10 a.m. Monday after the skimming device was found on the ATM machine, Brick Detective Sgt. Henry Drew said.

The investigation so far has revealed the skimming device was put on the machine sometime between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Saturday, he said.

The skimming device is placed directly over the card reader of the machine, and in most cases matches the machine exactly, making it very hard to notice, Drew said.

“Once on the machine, the device records the card numbers that are used in the machine. This information is then used to make fraudulent withdrawals from the customers’ accounts,” he said.

There have been fraudulent transactions that have occurred, and many of them have been based in the New York City area, he said. Ocean First Bank is working to identify customers who may have been affected, but Drew said anyone who used the ATM over the weekend should monitor their accounts closely.

Contact Brick Township Police at 732-262-1100 if you notice any suspicious transactions.

Additionally, Brick police are asking anyone who was in the area of the Ocean First Bank on Saturday between 2 and 8 p.m. who thinks they may have seen anything suspicious to contact Detective Robert Shepherd in the Brick Township Police Detective Bureau at 732-262-1121.
