The outage in the Herbertsville area left residents without electricity for almost five hours, the company said.

BRICK, NJ -- (UPDATED, 1:30 p.m.) Residents in the Herbertsville area of the township were left without electricity for almost five hours early Sunday morning, police and Jersey Central Power & Light confirmed.

Tricia Ingraham, a JCP&L spokesperson, said the outage was reported to the company about 2:30 a.m. and affected 1,601 customers in the area around Brick Memorial High School.

“All but 103 of those were restored by 7 a.m.,” she said.

The outage was the result of an equipment problem, Ingraham said, that appeared to have been the result of high winds. The area saw sustained winds of up to 20 mph overnight with gusts to more than 30 mph.

JCP&L crews restoring the power worked in temperatures that dropped to about 6 degrees with a wind chill of -15 overnight, according to the Weather Underground website.
