Father Says Son Surrendered In Fatal Brick Shooting, Report Says

The officers have been placed on administrative leave while the investigation into the incident is completed, chief says.

The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office revealed the names of the two Brick Township police officers who shot and killed a Brick Township man outside a home Sunday night.

The father of the man who was shot now says he has proof his son surrendered before police shot him, according to a report.

Patrolmen Jay Nye, 31, and Ryan Osborn, 25, were the officers who fired on Julian Hoffman, 21, outside a home on Cherrywood Circle, said Al Della Fave, spokesman for the prosecutor’s office. They have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the prosecutor’s office investigation, Brick Township Police Chief Nils R. Bergquist said.

Nye and Osborn responded to the home following a 9-1-1 call from a man who said he was going to create a disturbance and hung up, Della Fave said Monday. Upon arrival, they were confronted by a white male -- now identified as Hoffman -- approaching them carrying what appeared to be a black semi-automatic hand gun, Della Fave said.

Officers ordered the man to drop the weapon, and when he failed to do so, they fired, striking the man several times, killing him, Della Fave said.

But Derek Hoffman, Julian Hoffman’s father, told NJ.com on Tuesday that the family’s home has a video surveillance camera mounted at the front entranceway and that it captured proof that Julian Hoffman raised his arms as police told him to do.

Derek Hoffman was not home at the time of the incident, he told the Asbury Park Press.

“The investigation continues and all efforts will be made to expedite its completion,” Della Fave said Tuesday. “ There will be no further information released today. We ask the media and public to refrain from speculating on the facts surrounding the shooting. A full account of the evidence and circumstances surrounding the shooting will be released at the conclusion of the investigation.”
