Breaking: The bicyclist was struck as he crossed the westbound lanes of Route 70 at Burnt Tavern Road, police said.

BRICK, NJ — A 15-year-old boy was killed Saturday night when he was hit by a car while riding his bicycle across Route 70, Brick Township police said Sunday.

The teen, whom police did not identify, died at the scene, despite CPR attempts by first responders, Brick Sgt. Neal Pedersen said.

The crash happened shortly before 10:45 p.m. at the intersection of Route 70 and Burnt Tavern Road, Pedersen said. The initial investigation showed the teenager was riding north on Burnt Tavern Road and was crossing Route 70 when he was hit by a 2017 Subaru Forrester driven by Kathleen Calabro, 68, of Toms River, that was westbound on Route 70, he said.

The impact caused the bicyclist to hit the Subaru's windshield and then he was thrown to the ground, sustaining fatal injuries, Pedersen said. Brick police, Brick Police EMS and paramedics from MONOC tried unsuccessfully to revive the teen, he said.

The intersection of Route 70 and Burnt Tavern Road was closed during the investigation and reopened for traffic at 1:08 a.m., Pedersen said.
