Scam Utility Workers Prompt Calls To Brick Police

Claims that there is a problem with utility service are often a distraction technique to get into your home, Brick police said.

BRICK, NJ — Brick Township police are warning residents about fake utility workers who are going door-to-door and claiming there is a problem with the utility service.

The police department "has responded to multiple incidents" where people claiming to be from a utility company have knocked on residents' doors, police said.

"These subjects have been known to use distraction techniques for others to enter your home," police said.

"If they claim there is an issue with your service, always utilize the number on your monthly statement and NOT the number they present for you to contact," police said.

"Utility companies DO NOT have employees going door-to-door regarding your monthly usage or service bill," the police department said.

Solicitors must have a permit from the Brick Township clerk’s office for door-to-door solicitation.
