School Bus Driver Was Impaired During Lakewood Crash: Report

Breaking: The driver, from Howell, told police he had taken oxycodone, the report said.

LAKEWOOD, NJ — Police say a Howell Township man has been charged after he hit a parked car with a school bus while he was high, according to a report.

The Asbury Park Press report said Mark Waldhelm, 54, a driver with Jay's Bus Service, has been charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving and careless driving after the crash on Monday, quoting Lakewood police. There were no children on the bus at the time, and there was no one in the car, the report said.

Waldhelm told police he had taken oxycodone, an opioid painkiller, but the Press report said it was not known whether he had a prescription for it.

The incident is not the first involving a bus from Jay's Bus Service. In September, a driver from the private bus company was fired after a video surfaced of the bus attempting to pass a FedEx tractor-trailer truck on Airport Road. Both the school bus driver and the FedEx driver were fired.
